Now that Summer is here, why not take a ramble?

The countryside and lanes surrounding the pub are some of the finest. The wildlife and flora are exceptional. Finish the ramble with a pint and a huffer in The Compasses.

The recommended map is Ordinance Survey Explorer series No 183 (Chelmsford and the Rodings)

We offer three walks, each starting and ending at the Compasses.

The Shorter Ramble (5 miles/8 Km)

Turn left out of the pub and immediately take a path on the right opposite the car park entrance. Follow it to Mabb's Farm and continue along the road turning left at a T junction. Take the next path on the right for 1Km to Well House Farm and turn left along the road. Take the next path on the right, cross the A130 and take the left branch of the path near the river,

Then cross the river, turn left at the road and take the path to the right opposite the Green Man. Continue to the road, then take the track (Dunmow Lane) off to the right. This continues for over 2Km. Turn right along the A130 for about half a Km. The grass verges here are fine for walking. Beyond the junction with the B1417, take the track to the left. Jon the Hartford End - Littley Green road and continue back to the pub.

ENJOY YOUR HUFFER AND A PINT! YOU DESERVE IT!

The Longer Ramble (7 miles/12 Km)

Turn right out of the pub and then right again taking the road toward the closed brewery at Hartford End. At Littleypark take the track off to the right. You will soon see Leez Priory after you reach the highest point on the track.

Turn left along the road opposite the priory entrance, and almost immediately, turn right and find a footpath only a few yards away on the left.

The going is rough at first, cross a bridge and turn left through a long narrow field. the path takes you through a gap in a hedge and a lake appears on your left. Turn left at end of the lake and then right along a track.

Pass a plantation your right, and turn left on a track up gentle slope, pass a pond and continue to the Felsted-Hartford End road. Find a track which continues west just to your right. This takes you just beyond Absol bridge.

This follows the river and is very pleasant. Continue for about 3Km until you reach the old brewery at Hartford End. Take the road that leads opposite the brewery and turn right down a track on a sharp left hand bend. Cross the river, and take a path on the left which crosses a field and then converges with the river.

After about 1Km, turn left along a track which leads to a ford. This can be avoided by a well hidden bridge a few yards to the right. If the track is muddy, the bridge can be accessed from the field to your right. The entry to the field is close to where you join the track. Return to the track, walk up to the road, turn left, and the pub is half a Km away.
